One question, three surfaces: AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT

At least three different systems now answer the same question about your business. They share a foundation and diverge in mechanics, and the divergences decide where your effort pays.

Google AI Overviews

A generated summary above conventional results, triggered for some queries and skipped for others. It runs on Search's ranking systems, and a page must be indexed and snippet-eligible before it can appear as a supporting link. Official recommendation The practical consequence: your conventional Google health is your AI Overviews health. There is no separate door.

Google AI Mode

The conversational surface, leaning harder on query fan-out: one question becomes several searches across subtopics. Depth on the surrounding decisions earns retrieval here, beyond the head question alone. The eligibility rules and core systems stay the same; the competitive texture differs.

ChatGPT search

A different company, crawler and index. Access runs through OAI-SearchBot; relevance runs through rewritten queries; and OpenAI states inclusion cannot be guaranteed. Referral clicks arrive tagged (utm_source=chatgpt.com), which makes this the most measurable surface. Official recommendation A site can be healthy on Google and invisible here, or the reverse, because the pipelines are independent.

What they share

All three retrieve before they generate. All three need your content in reachable, retrievable text. All three select sources in ways their operators describe only in outline. The shared foundation, covered in Pillars 2 through 4, pays on every surface at once; surface-specific tactics sit on top of it.
